Headquarters, 1st Infantry Division, General Orders No. 10 (March 22, 1943)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant William G. Maddron (ASN: 7004717), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Service Battery, 7th Field Artillery Battalion, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in North Africa, in 1943. Sergeant Maddron, while under heavy enemy automatic weapons and artillery fire, directed the removal of his piece to a position better suited for delivery of direct fire and protection of his section. Coming under heavy enemy fire from an anti-tank weapon, he again secured a position which provided greater safety for his men without sacrificing his field of fire. Sergeant Maddron’s keen military judgment saved the lives of his men. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
