Headquarters, 1st Infantry Division, General Orders No. 10 (March 22, 1943)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Frank L. Zimmerman (ASN: 3531920), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with a *** Field Artillery Battalion of the 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in North Africa in 1943. Although severely wounded, Sergeant Zimmerman continued directing the fire of his artillery piece. He changed the position of his gun and placed direct fire upon an enemy threat to his flank. This effective fire forced the enemy to withdraw and enabled our artillery to resume operations against enemy strongholds. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
