The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Field Artillery) James A. Turner (ASN: 0-293365), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with a Field Artillery Battalion of the 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in North Africa in 1943. When pieces of enemy shell fragmentation struck a prepared round of 105-mm Howitzer ammunition at his gun position, Lieutenant Turner, with great presence of mind, ordered his gun crew to a place of safety. Displaying remarkable coolness and heroism, Lieutenant Turner picked up the burning projectile, carried it to a nearby well and submerged it, thus saving the lives of his men. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
