The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Donald Mackintosh (ASN: 0-375265), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company F, 2d Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in North Africa in 1943. Shortly after his company was ordered to withdraw from a perilous encirclement, Lieutenant Mackintosh was seriously wounded by heavy enemy fire. Fearing that his men, who were attempting to get him to a place of safety, would be killed by this heavy fire, he ordered them to drop him and save themselves. Lieutenant Mackintosh, because of this unselfish act, has been reported as missing in action. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
