Lieutenant Walker had volunteered to stay on at his post late in the afternoon after asking permission to send his men to the rear. He was giving directions to Allied planes which were to strafe and bomb the enemy near U.S. infantry lines. He had just spotted two enemy tanks which were shelling Allied positions and was telephoning their location when the bunker received a direct hit, and he was mortally wounded. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Second Lieutenant Walker, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
