The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Leon M. Wood (ASN: 0-1824130), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company B, 773d Tank Destroyer Battalion, 90th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in Luxembourg, on 17 January 1945. On that date, Lieutenant Wood led a platoon of the 773d Tank Destroyer Battalion in action against the enemy at Oberwampach, Luxembourg. Advancing on foot through heavy fire he determined the location of several enemy tanks, then fearlessly led his own force of tank destroyers against them, directing fire from the open deck of his vehicle. Three of the enemy tanks were destroyed. After the Lieutenant dismounted to place the infantry in advantageous positions the enemy attacked again, and again he led his tank destroyers against them, destroying two tanks. The heroic, inspiring leadership displayed by Second Lieutenant Wood, his courage and supreme devotion to duty, exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
