Headquarters, 9th Air Force, General Orders No. 51 (April 20, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant John J. Wagner (ASN: 36485271), United States Army Air Forces, for gallantry while serving as a member of the Air Crew of a Bomber in the 391st Bombardment Group (Medium), NINTH Air Force, in the European Theater of Operations, on 2 December 1944. Dispatched on a mission to bomb the defended town of Saarlauter, Germany, the aircraft in which Staff Sergeant Wagner was serving as Armorer-Gunner, was severely damaged. As he prepared to jump to safety he observed the severely wounded Radio-Gunner who was unable to leave the crippled aircraft. With total disregard for his own safety Staff Sergeant Wagner gallantly remained with his wounded comrade, administering first aid; and although fully cognizant of the dangers of landing the aircraft with full bomb load and without rudder control Staff Sergeant Wagner unselfishly remained to care for the wounded crew member. His heroic action while under enemy fire saved the life of his fellow man and reflects the highest distinction upon himself and his organization.
