By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Corporal [then Private] Fred Stekelenberg (ASN: 1039090), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Battery F, 10th Field Artillery Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, on the morning of 15 July 1918, near Greves Ferme, France, east of Chateau-Thierry, Corporal Stekelenberg showed the greatest bravery and coolness in working to re-establish broken telephone lines between the battery and the observation post. The wires were cut again and again, but he traced the lines over a distance of two kilometers in the darkness and in the midst of terrific shelling. He continued this after daylight being at that time in an open field and in view of the enemy almost the entire distance.
