The War Dept notified the family that “Sgt. Vos is listed among those missing in the Philippines after the fall of Corregidor on May 7.” Years later they received 5 cards from POW camps 5 and 1, and then were notified that he was listed as a POW on the sunk Arisan Maru and did not survive.

    (Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Staff Sergeant Eugene L. Vos (ASN: 6970812), United States Army Air Forces, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving as a member of the Air Crew of a Bomber in the 17th Bombardment Squadron, 27th Bombardment Group (Light), Far East Air Force, in aerial operations in the Southwest Pacific Theater of Operations, in 1942. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Staff Sergeant Vos, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army Air Forces.
