The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Technician Third Grade Robert G. MacKay (ASN: 20100266), United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an enemy of the United States at Bougainville, Solomon Islands, on 2 March 1944. Sergeant MacKay displayed coolness and courage in unhesitatingly going to the aid of a man he saw struggling in the water 200 yards off shore. Swimming through heavy surf and a strong undertow, he reached the man who was far beyond the breakers, and assisted him back to the beach. Sergeant MacKay’s alert action and complete disregard for the danger involved were responsible for saving this man’s life and were in the highest traditions of the United States Army.
