The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Technician Fifth Grade Walter H. Cheek (ASN: 44007531), United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an enemy of the United States while serving with the 37th Infantry Division at Luzon, Philippine Islands. After bathing in the Cagayan River on 10 July 1945, Private Cheek and a companion climbed to the top of a six-foot rock ledge which overhung the water. Suddenly the other soldier slipped from the mossy ledge into the river, striking his head on a submerged rock, and rendering him unconscious. He was quickly carried away from shore by the treacherous current. Private Cheek immediately dove into the water to aid the stricken soldier. After a strenuous battle against the strong current which flowed toward the middle of the dep river, Private Cheek successfully towed the drowning man to shore, and helped to revive him, Private Cheek’s courageous action saved his comrade from certain death. The exemplary courage and heroism displayed by Sergeant Cheek reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
