Headquarters, 37th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 350 (October 17, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Technician Fourth Grade Roy J. Butler (ASN: 35228524), United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an enemy of the United States while serving with the 37th Infantry Division at Luzon, Philippine Islands. Upon hearing an explosion at an adjoining Company’s kitchen near Cabanatuan, on 23 September 1945, Sergeant Butler ran out immediately to investigate the origin and found the building in flames. Upon approaching the blazing structure he heard the anguished cries of two men trapped in the kitchen. Sergeant Butler proceeded to smother the blaze with dirt. Sergeant Butler’s personal initiative and utter disregard for personal safety was the responsible factor for the removal of the severely burned men from the fire-enveloped kitchen and subsequent extinguishing of the fire. The exemplary courage and heroism displayed by Sergeant Butler reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
