By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Corporal Walter H. Vander Berg, United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with the 38th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, Corporal Vander Berg was a runner between Battalion and Regimental Headquarters, and displayed high courage in keeping up liaison through the heavy fire of the enemy. On 15 July 1918, he volunteered for and carried important dispatches through the Sumerlin Valley which was then under the enemy’s heavy shell fire. The days following, after other runners had been killed or wounded, through his untiring efforts liaison was maintained between his battalion and Regimental Headquarters until the completion of the advance when he took charge of and commanded the relay post on the Charteves-Jaulgonne road which was then under heavy fire from the enemy’s guns.
