By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), First Lieutenant (Infantry) John G. Snyder, United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with the 38th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, distinguished himself by conspicuous bravery, coolness and initiative on 15 July 1918. Lieutenant Snyder personally supervised the maintenance of the telephone lines under an intense bombardment by the enemy artillery and when the lines were so badly destroyed as to be beyond repair, on his own initiative organized his men and others into a Platoon and took up the defense on the right rear of the 3d Battalion which was flanked on that side by the enemy.
