The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Field Artillery) George J. Compton, United States Army, for gallantry in action on 30 July 1970, while serving as Battery Commander for Battery A, 2d Battalion, 77th Field Artillery Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, in the Republic of Vietnam. On that date, Fire Support Base REDLEG came under an intense mortar attack from a large enemy force. With complete disregard for his own safety, Captain Compton immediately alerted his battery to begin counter artillery fire. Unhesitatingly, Captain Compton moved to a raised platform where he could direct and adjust the artillery fire. Exposing himself to the hail of enemy mortar fire as well as low level outgoing friendly fire, Captain Compton accurately directed fire on the enemy positions by means of voice and arm signals. The quick, decisive action initiated by Captain Compton was instrumental in silencing the hostile positions. His valorous actions contributed immeasurably to the success of the mission. The bravery, aggressiveness, and devotion to duty exhibited by Captain Compton are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, the 25th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
