By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Sergeant George Besse, United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Company F, 30th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Crezancy, France, on 14 July 1918, Sergeant Besse administered first aid to wounded during a severe artillery bombardment. On 26 July his platoon advanced through enemy lines. Sergeant Besse placed his section on the left flank, although cut off during severe bombardment, and continued the attack in the face of severe enemy machine gun fire. On 11 October 1918, when his platoon officers and sergeants had become casualties, he organized, although under severe artillery and machine gun fire, and led the remaining men forward, capturing his objective.
