By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), First Lieutenant (Medical Reserve Corps) Thomas Watkins, United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with the Medical Depot, 30th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, during the 2d Battle of the Marine, 15 – 16 July 1918, Lieutenant Watkins rendered valiant service in evacuating wounded from the battlefield. His gallantry was displayed on 16 July when he went through a heavy barrage fire near Le Charmel Farm and entered Crezancy, going beyond as far as the cemetery into what was the enemy’s territory in search of wounded and succeeded in rescuing several who had been left in cellars at Crezancy. Without regard to his own safety he performed this act and by so doing did more than could have been expected of him.
