By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Private Douglas McDonald (ASN: 542071), United States Army, is cited (Posthumously) by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Company G, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, on 14 October 1918, near Cunel, France, Private McDonald displayed extraordinary heroism in advancing 100 yards beyond the line to an advanced observation post through heavy machine gun fire to rescue a comrade who was hurt and buried in the Observation Post by a shell. He administered First Aid and brought his comrade back to the line in safety. On 24 October 1918, he left his dugout under heavy shell fire to give first aid to a wounded comrade and was killed in the performance of this duty.
