By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Private Paul Link (ASN: 237344), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Company A, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, on 25 July 1918, near Le Charmel, France, Private Link showed exceptional coolness under heavy artillery and machine gun fire during an attack on a village near Le Charmel. His platoon leader having been disabled, Private Link took command of the platoon and was constantly going back and forth along the line, keeping up the advance and cheering his men. After reaching the objective, he voluntarily advanced with five comrades beyond the town and assisted in wiping out a machine gun emplacement.
