By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Private John Ardison (ASN: 542675), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Company K, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, on 15 October 1918, at Cierges, France, while that village was under violent shell fire and the roads were being swept by machine gun bullets, Private Ardison volunteered to carry an important message when death seemed certain. Although weak from exhaustion and being badly gassed, he performed his mission and returned to his Battalion. Throughout the engagements in which his Battalion participated he never failed to volunteer to carry messages and remained at his post until relieved.
