By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Private Lewis R. Adams (ASN: 541048), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Company C, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, on the night of 14 – 15 July 1918, near Fossoy, France, Private Adams volunteered to carry a message from Battalion to Regimental Headquarters during most violent artillery and machine gun fire. After having delivered the message he immediately returned with an answer. By this act of bravery he greatly assisted his Battalion Commander. Private Adams was killed in the Meuse-Argonne Offensive while carrying a message.
