By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Corporal Fred Lawson (ASN: 542413), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Company L, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, it was reported that the enemy had crossed the Marine River at Fossoy, France on the night of 14 – 15 July 1918, and Corporal Lawson twice led a patrol across his platoon front through heavy shell fire and at the risk of his life. On 15, 16, and 17 July he worked day and night unceasingly until he was forced to stop from complete exhaustion, displaying at all times the highest coolness and judgment and rendering services of the greatest value.
