By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Corporal Thomas F. Cook (ASN: 543083), United States Army, is cited (Posthumously) by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Company M, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, leaving a sheltered position Corporal Cook crossed a heavily shelled area to locate positions of security for members of his platoon. He then returned and led his platoon to the shelter, at all times having his men under complete control. Corporal Cook showed the greatest contempt for danger to which he was exposed in placing his men in security. It was only after all his men were under shelter that he sought shelter for himself. In performing these acts he was mortally wounded.
