While serving with the Machine Gun Company, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, during the Meuse-Argonne Offensive in October 1918 at Cunel Heights, Corporal Begley carried a message four hundred yards to the front lines under heavy artillery and machine gun fire and on his return trip carried a wounded comrade to the first aid station. Conditions made it almost impossible to get food up to the company on account of exposure and the enemy’s machine guns and artillery. This work was entrusted to this man who promptly and efficiently carried it out giving the company their first food for five days. He was severely wounded in the discharge of this duty.
