By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), First Lieutenant (Infantry) Harry D. Ayres, United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. Lieutenant Ayres distinguished himself while serving with the 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces. On the morning of 11 October 1918, at Cunel Woods, the 3d Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, owing to heavy shell fire, arrived in such a disorganized state that a successful attack was impossible. Lieutenant Ayres, who was at that time 3d Battalion Adjutant, left his shelter and with absolute disregard for his own safety and at the imminent risk of his life, moved quietly among the scattered units, and assembled them to the “jumping off” point, thus contributing largely to the success that followed.
