By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Sergeant [then Corporal] Adderson C. Roberts (ASN: 2339675), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Company K, 4th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in the Bois de Foret and on Hill No. 281 from 22 October to 27 October 1918, Sergeant displayed qualities equal to the highest traditions of the American Army. Weakened by sickness, the result of being gassed, he repeatedly refused to avail himself of his company commander’s permission to go to the rear, but on the contrary continuously exposed himself under heavy fire, going from one end of the company to the other, cheering and encouraging the men, and by his own example raising and maintaining the morale of the entire organization.
