Headquarters, 37th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 148 (June 12, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Staff Sergeant Eugene H. Peters (ASN: 6026789), United States Army, for heroism while serving with the 37th Infantry Division at Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 4 April 1945. When their company ammunition dump caught fire, Sergeant Peters and a fellow soldier courageously braved the intense heat and danger of an imminent explosion in order to remove burning white phosphorous grenades from the dump and extinguish the blaze. Their quick, voluntary and heroic action averted possible injury to a large group of men in the immediate vicinity. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
