Headquarters, 37th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 138 (June 2, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Sergeant Ottis Maggard (ASN: 35671744), United States Army, for heroism while serving with the 37th Infantry Division at Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 3 May 1945. When a salvage enemy ammunition dump, containing large caliber artillery shells and other high explosives, caught fire, a laborer worker in the area had both legs blown off above the knees and was unable to drag himself to safety. Disregarding the great danger involved, Sergeant Maggard and two comrades secured a litter, rushed into the exploding ammunition dump to where the injured man lay within ten feet of a burning pile of shells, and removed the casualty to a place of safety. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
