The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Michael Holibonich (ASN: 35009304), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company I, 3d Battalion, 145th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 7 February 1945. When the enemy launched a powerful night attack against our lines, the brunt of the assault fell on a machine gun position manned by Private Holibonich and other men. Although subjected to intense hostile mortar and machine gun fire, he courageously stayed at his exposed position and directed a steady volume of fire at the Japanese. The attack continued for two hours and some enemy soldiers crept to within a few feet of the position, but he held fast. His stubborn fighting spirit materially contributed to the successful thwarting of the enemy attack. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
