Tate, United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an enemy of the United States while serving with Battery D, 441st Anti-Aircraft Artillery (Self Propelled) Battalion, 3d Infantry Division, in action at San Steiano, Italy, on 11 August 1943. The exemplary courage and heroism displayed by Sergeant Tate reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
