(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major Vernon R. Todd (AFSN: 14246A), United States Air Force, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving as Navigator-Bombardier of a B-26 Invader Attack Bomber of the 3d Bombardment Group (Light), FIFTH Air Force, in aerial operations in Korea, on the night of 30 December 1952. Major Todd displayed outstanding airmanship and professional skill on a low level rail reconnaissance mission deep in North Korea. The Pilot sighted a highly lucrative target of five locomotives and thirty-seven boxcars in a marshalling yard and immediately attacked, despite hostile ground fire. Disregarding his own personal safety, Major Todd made repeated bombing passes which resulted in the destruction of three locomotives and ten boxcars and damage to two other locomotives and ten boxcars. As a result of this mission, vital rail transportation facilities were destroyed, seriously hampering the enemy’s potential in that area. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Major Todd, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
