    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Colonel (Air Corps) Herbert Bishop Thatcher (ASN: 0-18865), United States Army Air Forces, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving as Pilot of a B-26 Marauder Light Bomber and as Commanding Officer of the 99th Bombardment Wing, EIGHTH Air Force, in aerial operations in France, on 11 November 1943. When the Marauder Bomber he was piloting during a bombing mission near Cherbourg, France, was hit by enemy flak disabling one engine and wounding himself, notwithstanding his own wounds, Colonel Thatcher remained in the pilot seat and brought the bomber home on one engine, and landed safely. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Colonel Thatcher, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army Air Forces.
