The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting a Gold Star in lieu of a Second Award of the Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V” to Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Nicholas Eugene Walsh, United States Navy, for heroic achievement while serving with United States Navy SEAL Team ONE, Detachment Golf, Oscar Platoon, engaged in armed conflict against the North Vietnamese and Viet Cong communist aggressors in the Republic of Vietnam. On 24 August 1971, Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Walsh was serving as patrol leader on a mission deep in enemy-infested territory. Approaching the objective, he entered a structure as pat of a two-man search element and was immediately attacked by two Viet Cong. After overpowering them, he aided his comrade in defeating the remaining adversary. Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Walsh then led his men from the scene and directed air strikes on the target area before securing a landing zone and extracting. His exemplary professionalism, devotion to duty and courage under fire reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
