The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain Norbert Joseph Ostrozny (AFSN: FR-3195230), United States Air Force, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force as Pilot of a B-52 Bomber of the 837th Bombardment Squadron in action near Vinh, North Vietnam, on 22 November 1972. On that date, his aircraft was severely damaged by a surface-to-air missile. With complete disregard for his personal safety, Captain Ostrozny successfully maintained control of his aircraft despite loss of two engines, fire warning lights on four others, loss of all instruments except the copilot’s airspeed indicator, aircraft lights, navigational and directional instruments and all radios, until egress from the target area to a point over friendly territory where bailout was executed. Through his heroic efforts he and his crew members were saved from possible death or capture by the enemy, and the enemy was denied access to the highly sensitive aircraft equipment, all of which they certainly would have exploited to the maximum extent possible. The gallantry and selfless devotion to duty displayed by Captain Ostrozny reflect great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Air Force.
