(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant James Richard Nichols, United States Air Force, for gallantry in connection with military operations against an opposing armed force while serving as Pilot of an F-100 Fighter Aircraft of the 612th Tactical Fighter Squadron, Phuy Cat Air Base, South Vietnam in 1968, and subsequently as an F-4 Phanton Aircraft Commander with the 433d Tactical Fighter Squadron, Ubon Royal Thai Air Force Base, Thailand, in 1972, in action over Southeast Asia. By his gallantry and devotion to duty, First Lieutenant Nichols has reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Air Force.
