The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain Alvin Andrew Kontrick (AFSN: FR-3195135), United States Air Force, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as an F-100 Pilot of the 355th Tactical Fighter Squadron, Tuy Hoa Air Base, South Vitnam, in action near Song Be, Republic of Vietnam, on 20 January 1970. On that date, he was diverted from a pre-planned target to support friendly ground forces who were under fierce attack from hostile soldiers. He remained on target at minimum fuel to provide the needed air cover. His accurate ordnance delivery in close proximity to friendly forces, in marginal weather, and amid moderate automatic weapons and small arms fire turned back the hostile attack and spared numerous casualties. The professional competence, aerial skill and devotion to duty displayed by Captain Kontrick reflect great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Air Force.
