The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant Michael Dennis Muldoon (AFSN: FR-80547), United States Air Force, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force as an F4D Pilot of the 435th Tactical Fighter Squadron, Ubon Royal Thai Air Force Base, Thailand, in action over North Vietnam on 3 January 1963. On that date, Lieutenant Muldoon successfully attacked and destroyed a strategic military target in the heart of North Vietnam in the face of overwhelming ground fire. When attacked by eight hostile aircraft, Lieutenant Muldoon personally engaged them without regard for personal safety. As a result of his actions, Lieutenant Muldoon destroyed one hostile aircraft and dispersed the others before they could inflict damage to any friendly aircraft. By his gallantry and devotion to duty, Lieutenant Muldoon has reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Air Force.
