Action Date:
The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant William Hampton Harris, United States Air Force, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force as Pilot of an F-4D of the 390th Tactical Fighter Squadron, DaNang Air Base, South Vietnam, in action on a highly classified night low level mission over North Vietnam on 18 March 1968. Success of this mission required unescorted single-ship low level navigation deep into North Vietnam, penetration of a low overcast without the assistance of electronic navigational aids and low-level maneuvering in extremely rugged mountainous terrain. Lieutenant Harris displayed diligence, perseverance and courage far exceeding that normally expected of an aircrew member in successfully completing this mission. By his gallantry and devotion to duty, Lieutenant Harris has reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Air Force.
