James Sue graduated from the U.S. Air Force Academy at Colorado Springs, Colorado, Class of 1964. He retired as a U.S. Air Force Reserve Lieutenant Colonel.
The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain James Edward Sue, United States Air Force, for gallantry in connection with military operations against an opposing armed force while serving as a Pilot with the 308th Tactical Fighter Squadron, Tuy Hoa Air Base, Republic of Vietnam, in action over Southeast Asia on 21 January 1969. On that date, as an F-100F Forward Air Controller, while conducting attacks against hostile antiaircraft artillery sites, Captain Sue repeatedly dover his aircraft through intense barrages of hostile flak to pinpoint and mark targets for attacking fighters. His aggressiveness and courage in the face of withering hostile fire and his complete disregard for his own personal safety were instrumental in the location, silencing, and destruction of the hostile guns. By his gallantry and devotion to duty, Captain Sue has reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Air Force.
