The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Captain Gary Sidney Olin (AFSN: FR-78836), United States Air Force, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an opposing armed hostile force as an F-105 Pilot of the 357th Tactical Fighter Squadron, Takhli Royal Thai Air Force Base, Thailand, in action near Kep, North Vietnam, on 4 October 1967. On that date, Captain Olin flew the number four position in a flight of four F-105 Thunderchief Fighter-Bombers executed against a vital and heavily defended railroad yard located deep within the heartland of North Vietnam. Captain Olin’s quick and accurate target identification in restricted visibility, his total disregard for his personal safety after having sustained a direct hit from intense antiaircraft defenses, and his professional skill in the precise delivery of his ordnance contributed significantly toward the destruction of a vital military target. By his gallantry and devotion to duty, Captain Olin has reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Air Force.

Headquarters, 7th Air Force, Special Orders G-913 (1968)The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain Gary Sidney Olin (AFSN: FR-78836), United States Air Force, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an opposing armed hostile force as an F-105 Pilot of the 357th Tactical Fighter Squadron, Takhli Royal Thai Air Force Base, Thailand, in action over North Vietnam, on 23 August 1967. On that date, Captain Olin was targeted against the Bac Giang railroad bridge near Hanoi. In spite of extremely formidable hostile defenses including surface-to-air missiles and barrages of accurate antiaircraft fire, Captain Olin rolled in for his dive bomb run, received a direct hit on his aircraft and courageously pressed his attack, delivering his ordnance on target. With complete disregard for his own safety, Captain Olin, although flying a damaged aircraft, joined on another aircraft that had been hit and was on fire in an effort to render assistance to the disabled aircraft and the later rescue efforts of the downed pilot. By his gallantry and devotion to duty, Captain Olin has reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Air Force.
