Action Date:
The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain Trusten Allan McArtor, United States Air Force, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force as an RF-4C Aircraft Commander of the 12th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron, Tan Son Nhut Air Base, Vietnam, in action in Southeast Asia on 23 April 1969. On that date, Captain McArtor flew an unarmed, unescorted reconnaissance mission deep in hostile territory to photograph heavily defended infiltration routes. In weather that severely restricted visibility, he was forced to drastically reduce the aircraft’s altitude to facilitate visual navigation. He then made repeated passes through the intense and accurate ground fire to obtain complete photographic coverage of all assigned targets. By his gallantry and devotion to duty, Captain McArtor has reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Air Force.
