The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross with Combat “V” to Captain Charles William Hoilman, Jr. (AFSN: FR-78714), United States Air Force, for heroism while participating in aerial flight as the Aircraft Commander of an HH-3E Rescue Helicopter of the 37th Aerospace Rescue and Recovery Squadron, in Southeast Asia, on 3 December 1969. On that date, Captain Hoilman penetrated an extremely hostile area to effect the rescue of two downed Air Force pilots. Even after his aircraft had sustained severe battle damage, he persisted tenaciously, and with complete disregard for his personal safety, until both pilots had been safely hoisted from the midst of the surrounding hostile troops. The outstanding heroism and selfless devotion to duty displayed by Captain Hoilman reflect great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Air Force.

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Distinguished Flying Cross with Combat “V” to Captain Charles William Hoilman, Jr. (AFSN: FR-78714), United States Air Force, for heroism while participating in aerial flight as the Aircraft Commander of an HH-3E Rescue Helicopter of the 37th Aerospace Rescue and Recovery Squadron, in Southeast Asia, on 5 December 1969. On that date, Captain Hoilman and his fellow crewmembers heroically attempted the rescue of two American Airmen from one of the most heavily defended hostile areas in Southeast Asia. This rescue attempt was continued until the hostile ground fire became so extreme that the helicopter was in imminent danger of being downed with severe battle damage and the crew was forced to leave the area. The outstanding heroism and selfless devotion to duty displayed by Captain Hoilman reflect great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Air Force.

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting a Second Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Third Award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain Charles William Hoilman, Jr. (AFSN: FR-78714), United States Air Force, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as Aircraft Commander of an HH-3E Helicopter of the 37th Aerospace Rescue and Recovery Squadron, near DaNang Airfield, Republic of Vietnam, on 5 April 1970. On that date, Captain Hoilman’s exemplary knowledge and outstanding airmanship, displayed under extremely hazardous conditions, culminated in the rescue of five United States Marines. Captain Hoilman hovered his helicopter over the wreckage of the helicopter which the Marines had been in, despite downdrafts and variable winds, until all were safely hoisted aboard. The professional competence, aerial skill and devotion to duty displayed by Captain Hoilman reflect great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Air Force.

U.S. Air Force Academy Southeast Asia Plaza of HeroesThe President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain Charles William Hoilman, Jr. (AFSN: FR-78714), United States Air Force, for gallantry in connection with military operations against an opposing armed force while serving as Aircraft Commander of a HH-3E Rescue Helicopter of the 37th Aerospace Rescue and Recovery Squadron, in action near Da Nang, Republic of Vietnam, on 21 April 1970. On that date, Captain Hoilman led a flight of helicopters attempting the rescue of a United States Marine pilot. With complete disregard for his personal safety, Captain Hoilman descended through hostile fire and began the rescue attempt despite oncoming darkness and intense groundfire. Only when his aircraft was hit and rendered incapable of a rescue, and he, as well as two of his crewmembers, was wounded, did he withdraw. By his gallantry and devotion to duty, Captain Hoilman has reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Air Force.
