The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain Michael Corwin Kippenhan (AFSN: FR-70110), United States Air Force, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as a Forward Air Congroller of the 20th Tactical Air Support Squadron, in an O-1 Bird Dog aircraft in action in Southeast Asia on 2 and 3 November 1967. On those dates, Captain Kippenhan was responsible for the safe extracitn of a friendly forces reconnaissance patrol which had been ambushed by superior hostile forces. Faced with extremely marginal weather, at times as low as three hundred feet, Captain Kippenhan located the patrol; found a suitable landing zone for the extraction helicopters; and supervised the entire extraction, ultimately rescuing the entire patrol without loss. The professional competence, aerial skill and devotion to duty displayed by Capain Kippenhan reflect great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Air Force.
