The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting a Second Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Third Award of the Distinguished Flying Cross with Combat “V” to Captain Gaillard Ray Peck, Jr. (AFSN: FR-64021), United States Air Force, for heroism while participating in aerial flight as an F-4D Aircraft Commander of the 433d Tactical Fighter Squadron, Ubon Royal Thai Air Force Base, Thailand, in action in Southeast Asia on 17 November 1968. On that date, Captain Peck attached numerous vehicles of hostile armed forces in a heavily defended transshipment area. Disregarding withering ground fire and darkness, Captain Peck placed his ordnance exactly on target and destroyed the vehicles, thus denying the hostile forces vital supplies. The outstanding heroism and selfless devotion to duty displayed by Captain Peck reflect great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Air Force.

On that date, Captain Peck attacked an unfriendly vital line of communication, while under intensive hostile antiaircraft artillery fire. Despite the fact that this aircraft was hit multiple times, he continued the attack, and successfully closed a railway tunnel and destroyed supplies destined for unfriendly forces. The professional competence, aerial skill and devotion to duty displayed by Captain Peck reflect great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Air Force.

Headquarters, 7th Air Force, Special Orders G-1497 (April 15, 1969)The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain Gaillard Ray Peck, Jr. (AFSN: FR-64021), United States Air Force, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in Southeast Asia on 25 January 1969. On that date, Captain Peck, as Aircraft Commander of an F-4D “Phantom” of the 433d Tactical Fighter Squadron, Ubon Royal Thai Air Force Base, Thailand, conducted a most determined and heroic series of attacks against a lethal concentration of antiaircraft defenses. These defenses had been established as a deadly trap and had succeeded in destroying several aircraft just prior to this mission. Disregarding all considerations of his own personal safety, Captain Peck made repeated devastating attacks against the gun positions until the threat was eliminated. In doing so he was subjected to some of the most intense and accurate antiaircraft artillery fire ever experienced by aircrew in Southeast Asia. These actions enabled subsequent missions of great importance to the United States Air Force to be successfully conducted. By his gallantry and devotion to duty, Captain Peck has reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Air Force.

Headquarters, 7th Air Force, Special Orders G-430 (February 22, 1969)The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Distinguished Flying Cross with Combat “V” to Captain Gaillard Ray Peck, Jr. (AFSN: FR-64021), United States Air Force, for heroism while participating in aerial flight as an F-4D Aircraft Commander of the 433d Tactical Fighter Squadron, Ubon Royal Thai Air Force Base, Thailand, in action over North Vietnam on 23 October 1968. On that date, he was assigned the night interdiction of a heavily defended ferry crossing and storage area vital to hostile forces. Captain Peck heroically made multiple attacks on this important target. His actions required considerable courage in view of a malfunction rendering a supporting aircraft’s flare dropping capability inoperative. The attacks were made in total darkness, without the aid of any visual references. Completely disregarding his personal safety, and under extremely heavy defensive fire, Captain Peck attacked and destroyed his assigned target despite the mountainous karst terrain. The outstanding heroism and selfless devotion to duty displayed by Captain Peck reflect great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Air Force.
