The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting a Silver Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Sixth Award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain Lanny Thomas Gus Lancaster (AFSN: FR-63943), United States Air Force, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as an F-4D Aircraft Commander of the 8th Tactical Fighter Squadron, Ubon Royal Thai Air Force Base, Thailand, in action in Southeast Asia on 22 November 1971. On that date, Captain Lancaster flew a strike mission against a large truck park and storage area located deep in hostile territory. Defenses in the immediate target area included two active surface-to-air missile sites and multiple heavy antiaircraft positions. Despite intense and tracking antiaircraft fire directed at his aircraft, Captain Lancaster made repeated dive-bombing passes on the target which resulted in one antiaircraft position silenced, four trucks destroyed, five large sustained fires, and eleven secondary explosions. The professional competence, aerial skill and devotion to duty displayed by Captain Lancaster reflect great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Air Force.
