Action Date:
The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain Lanny Thomas Gus Lancaster (AFSN: FR-63943), United States Air Force, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force as a Forward Air Controller and F-100 Pilot of the 531st Tactical Fighter Squadron, Bien Hoa Air Base, South Vietnam, in action near Dak To, Republic of Vietnam, on 21 November 1967. On that date, Captain Lancaster was scrambled from the Bien Hoa Air Base alert pad to provide close air support to the United States Army’s 173d Airborne Brigade, engaged in heavy combat with hostile forces thirteen miles west of Dak To. The mountainous terrain in the target area was covered by a low overcast allowing the fighters only three to four hundred feet of clear air space in which to maneuver near the mountain peaks and at best, two thousand feet in the valleys. Despite the seemingly insurmountable conditions, he made pass after pass on the hostile positions, delivering his ordnance with outstanding precision on each attack. With complete disregard for his own safety, he pressed his attacks through the intense hostile ground fire until all ordnance as expended on the target positions. By his gallantry and devotion to duty, Captain Lancaster has reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Air Force.
