The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain John Joseph Wolcott (AFSN: FR-62806), United States Air Force, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force while serving as Pilot of an A-1 Skyraider of the 602d Special Operations Squadron, Nakhon Royal Thai Air Force Base, Thailand, in action in Southeast Asia on 13 September 1970. On that date, Captain Wolcott was scrambled as lead in a flight of two A-1 Skyraiders in support of a long-range Army reconnaissance team surrounded on three sides by hostile forces. With complete disregard for his personal safety, Captain Wolcott flew his heavily loaded and vulnerable Skyraider at tree-top level, hoping to draw hostile ground gunners which had already downed a rescue helicopter into revealing their positions. His aircraft sustained serious battle damage, but the plan worked, and Captain Wolcott and his wingman silenced the exposed positions, setting the stage for a successful rescue of the tam. By his gallantry and devotion to duty, Captain Wolcott has reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Air Force.
