On that date, Captain Wolcott was scrambled as lead in a flight of two A-1 Skyraiders in support of a long-range Army reconnaissance team surrounded on three sides by hostile forces. With complete disregard for his personal safety, Captain Wolcott flew his heavily loaded and vulnerable Skyraider at tree-top level, hoping to draw hostile ground gunners which had already downed a rescue helicopter into revealing their positions. His aircraft sustained serious battle damage, but the plan worked, and Captain Wolcott and his wingman silenced the exposed positions, setting the stage for a successful rescue of the tam. By his gallantry and devotion to duty, Captain Wolcott has reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Air Force.
