On that date, while under intense and accurate fire from opposing forces, Captain Lane demonstrated courage, undaunted determination and superior skill in pressing home a devastating air support mission against hostile positions. Persevering in the face of danger and death, he relentlessly and effectively aided in neutralizing the hostile forces. On that date, Captain Lane flew an F-105 Thunderchief on a flak suppression mission against a hostile Railroad and Highway Bridge. Evading four SA-2 missiles and intense flak that damaged five strike aircraft, Captain Lane delivered his ordnance directly on an active flak site. The flight this day was credited with destroying four sites enabling the later strike pilots to deliver their ordnance more accurately. On that date, Captain Lane was element leader in a flight of F-105 aircraft assigned to suppress flak sites. In spite of some of the heaviest antiaircraft fire ever witnessed, and taking a hit in the aft section of his aircraft, Captain Lane continued his attack putting his bombs on the target. On that date, Captain Lane was the leader of a flight of four F-105 Thunderchiefs assigned to attack the largest and most important airfield in North Vietnam. Despite numerous surface-to-air missiles and intense antiaircraft fire, he delivered his ordnance precisely on target, causing heavy damage to the airfield complex. During egress and while still under heavy antiaircraft fire, Captain Lane heroically slowed his aircraft to allow the other members of his flight to rejoin into a mutually protective formation. On that date, Captain Lane was the commander of a force of sixteen F-105 Thunderchiefs assigned to attack a vital rail yard in North Vietnam. Despite marginal visibility, concentrated antiaircraft fire and threatening hostile aircraft, he led his force on a highly successful mission. The professional competence, aerial skill and devotion to duty displayed by Captain Lane reflect great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Air Force.

Continuing on through extremely poor weather and intense hostile fire that damaged four aircraft in the force, Captain Lane placed his ordnance directly on target severely cratering the runway and rendering it unserviceable.
