Evading four SA-2 missiles and intense flak that damaged five strike aircraft, Captain Lane delivered his ordnance directly on an active flak site. The flight this day was credited with destroying four sites enabling the later strike pilots to deliver their ordnance more accurately. On that date, Captain Lane was the leader of a flight of four F-105 Thunderchiefs assigned to attack the largest and most important airfield in North Vietnam. Despite numerous surface-to-air missiles and intense antiaircraft fire, he delivered his ordnance precisely on target, causing heavy damage to the airfield complex. During egress and while still under heavy antiaircraft fire, Captain Lane heroically slowed his aircraft to allow the other members of his flight to rejoin into a mutually protective formation.
