The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, 20 July 1942, takes pleasure in presenting the Legion of Merit to Colonel Peter Barry Lane (AFSN: 62662), United States Air Force, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States as Chief, Western Hemisphere, Deputy Chief of Staff, Plans and Operations, Headquarters United States Air Force, Washington, District of Columbia, from 10 August 1983 to 30 September 1984. During this period, Colonel Lane’s judgment, keen insight, and understanding of complex politico-military events contributed directly to the formulation and implementation of United States policy positions concerning Canada and Latin America. His vast knowledge of the region and its complex political relationships was fully demonstrated as a member of the interagency crisis action team during the Grenada rescue operation. The singularly distinctive accomplishments of Colonel Lane culminate a long and distinguished career in the service of his and reflect the highest credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
